Frequently asked questions

The eight that come up most often.

Can I break something by clicking?

Almost never. Deleted files go to the recycle bin, settings can be changed back, and Ctrl+Z undoes most actions. The one prompt worth reading is the one asking permission to make changes to the system.

Where did my file go?

Almost certainly into Documents, Downloads or Desktop. Press the Windows key and type part of the name; the search finds it wherever it is.

Why is my computer slow?

Usually a full disk, too many programs starting automatically, or too many browser tabs. In that order.

What is the difference between the line and the cross?

The line hides a window while the program keeps running; the cross closes the program. A hidden window is still on the taskbar.

Should I turn the computer off every night?

Not necessarily, but restarting once a week clears problems that accumulate while it stays on.

A message says my computer is infected. What now?

If it appeared in a web page, close the page. Never call a number shown in such a message and never install what it recommends.

How do I report an error?

Through the contact form, naming the page and the step that did not work.

Does this site use analytics?

No. Your browser stores one value, recording whether you have seen the notice.
